Answers from Our West Los Angeles and Westchester Chiropractor

If you have heard numerous references to "training your core" or "strengthening your core," you may have no idea what these references mean, or how they relate to your own health and wellness. Here at Joga Chiropractic Center, we offer this form of muscular training both as a therapeutic service and as a useful form of preventative wellness to complement chiropractic care. Let's look at some common questions and answers about this form of natural wellness work, courtesy of our West Los Angeles and Westchester chiropractor.

What does it mean?

"Core training" refers to exercises designed to build up and maintain your core muscles. The core muscle are the large muscle groups in your lower abdomen, back and pelvic girdle that control your vertical balance.

What do the core muscles do?

Your core enables you to stand, walk, run, dance, and generally move around in a healthy and balanced manner. It also provides essential support to your spinal column so that you can maintain good posture and correct spinal alignment.

What happens when core muscles become weak or injured?

Weak or injured core muscles make your spinal column more vulnerable to damage or subluxation, either from a sudden impact or from postural problems. Weak core muscles contribute to backaches, sciatica, muscle strains, fatigue from respiratory or circulatory impairment, and workplace-related chronic pain.

How do core exercises complement chiropractic care?

This form of physical training makes perfect sense as a support for your chiropractic treatment. Strengthening the muscles that support the spine allows you keep enjoying the benefits of your last adjustment, while reducing the likelihood that you'll need another one quite so soon.

What kinds of exercises help the core muscles?

Exercises that increase strength and flexibility in the abdomen, hips, lower back and pelvis are all helpful for stabilizing your core. Examples include bridges performed while lying on your side or back, planks performed by raising your body onto your forearms, and lowering one raised leg at a time while laying on your back.

What tools do I need?

Many core exercises, including the examples listed above, require no special tools or accessories. Some other exercises allow for the use of exercise balls, weights or other items.

How do I get started?

Never begin any exercise regimen until you have received the okay from your medical practitioner. Our chiropractor will first evaluate your overall condition and your spinal alignment to determine which exercises you can perform safely. Personalized training could make all the difference between a stronger body and a regrettable new injury.
